Description for Neurologic Patient Volunteers:
• These sessions are organized to assist physical therapy students in developing their examination and intervention
skills with patients diagnosed with neurological disorders. The lab sessions will be a mock set-up of what would actually
happen within a clinical setting. Unlike a typical clinical setting the students will work in small groups along with
several very experienced licensed physical therapists guiding their examination and then assisting with developing a plan
of care for each patient volunteer and choosing appropriate interventions. These students have already been on several clinical
rotations and are familiar with treating patients with similar disorders.
• As per departmental guidelines, a patient volunteer must sign a consent form and have a referral from their
physician to participate. This is done with all patient volunteers. The physician referral is simply to ensure
that the patient volunteer is in good health and may participate in functional and therapeutic activities, such as walking,
climbing stairs (if able), propelling a wheelchair, and participating in basic strengthening and stretching exercises.
All activities are selected depending on the patient volunteer’s physical abilities and comfort level.
• Lab sessions are held during 5 consecutive weeks on each Friday starting on October 7th, 2011 and ending
on November 4th, 2011 (10/7, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28, 11/4). A session will run from 1 PM to 3 PM. There is no fee
for participating. Unfortunately we are unable to provide transportation at this time.
